WWE Trademarks: The Benefits of Licensing Trademarks

The WWE filed several trademark applications relating to nicknames and slogans of their main superstars.

It appears that most of the applications are intended for merchandising purposes, as noted by the designations for International Class 25 (clothing). The WWE sought registration of the following terms:

  • Stun The World (Kevin Owens’ slogan)

  • Wreck Everyone & Leave (Roman Reigns’ slogan)

  • Claymore Country (Drew McIntyre’s slogan)

  • Hit Row (NXT faction)

  • Legit Boss (Sasha Banks’ nickname)

  • Happy Corbin

  • Nikki ASH

A trademark is a word, phrase, symbol, or design, or a combination of these elements, that identifies and distinguishes the source of goods/services. Trademarks are essentially brand identifiers. Trademarks are very important. It enables you to retain exclusive rights to your mark.

If the United States Patent and Trademark Office grants registration for the WWE’s trademarks, the WWE can then grant licenses to third parties to manufacture and sell clothing. Such business deal is lucrative because the WWE can sell the trademark rights to third parties (licensing) while it focuses its own resources on wrestling. It could also contract to receive a certain percentage of the merchandise sales.
